Sand and Drain Rock We were lucky that the sand truck had good access to our drain bed. Once it is dumped, the sand must be leveled. This usually involves some deft maneuvering by the excavator and some hand work using a shovel and rake.  Once you have spread the sand you should put in any inspection tubes that are required on your approved septic plan. Next comes the drain rock. Start by putting in a layer of drain rock to the grade of the bottom of the drain tiles. Then place the drain tiles. Then pour in more rock to cover the the tiles.
